Over the years I have painted many and varied Bondi scenes, seeking to capture a sense of my hometown in paint. I have always loved the way the valley of Bondi (which we used to call "Scum Valley" as kids), is framed by the blocks of apartments, houses, and various buildings that stack up from the beachfront to the west, and how these fall into a silhouette shadow when the sun goes over the horizon. As a kid, this stacked-up panorama held a mysterious sense of wonder to me, the glinting lights from inside the houses and apartments holding all the exciting possibilities of life and the world.
